Statement of Faith

A Statement of Faith is a brief, written description of what a church, a Christian or a Christian organization believes.  The oldest such statement is the Apostle's Creed, which has been handed down to us from the very earliest Christians.  It is a confession shared by the Orthodox, Protestant and Roman Catholic churches.

Apostle's Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, the Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord: Who was conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.  He decended into hell.  The third day He arose again from the dead.  He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty, whence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.  I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy *catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting.

*The word catholic means universal.

Benton Bible Church believes and confesses these eternal truths about our Lord.  And since we are Evangelicals, we understand and express these truths as the Evangelical Church has historically taught them.  The Evangelical expression of the Apostle's teaching has been summed up in five Latin phrases.

Sola Scriptura-Only Scripture

The only firm foundation for truth is the Word of God as it is revealed by the Holy Spirit through the teaching, preaching of the Church and the Spirit-led study of the Christian.  Reason (Proverbs 14:12), tradition and philosophies (Colossians 2:8) or special revelations, even if they come from angels (Galatians 1:8), do not replace Scripture (II Timothy 3:16, 17) as the prime authority.  Scripture has been breathed by God and is given to help us understand Him, His will and His truth through the on-going work of the Holy Spirit in the Church and in the life of the Believer.

Sola Gratia-Only Grace

We come into a relationship with God by His grace, or in other words, by His free gift.  We can't earn it.  We can't do some special work or go through some special ritual to receive Him and His favor.  We can't inherit it or buy it.  It is free to us.  It was not free for Christ however.  He paid the price of death that faces us all so that we could have the eternal life that only He could give.  Just as we cannot be "good enough" to receive God's favor, also we cannot be "good enough" to stay in God's favor.  He receives us and keeps us by His grace.

Sola Fide-Only Faith

We receive God's grace by faith, by trusting in Him.  Like any other gift, God's grace must be received.  We trust Him and what He has done for us.  And His grace helps us begin the faith walk that will allow us to become the person He created us to be.  Our walk with the Lord brings us the joy and peace that we will only find by His grace through faith in Him (Ephesians 2:8-10).

Solus Christus-Only Christ

Jesus made it clear that He was the way (John 14:6).  There are many pretenders, cults and false teachers that would like to point to "another way".  Those "other ways" will always rely upon good deeds and human works to win God's favor.  They invariably teach that God's forgiveness of our sins requires Jesus plus something else.  It is not a free gift of grace but something to be earned.  And this "other way" has been revealed to the prophet or teacher through sources outside of the Word of God.  Our forgiveness and salvation, as revealed in Scripture, is by grace, through faith in Christ alone.

Soli Deo Gloria-Only Glory

God receives the glory alone.  No person or group of people has higher status than any other.  Our responsibilities, callings and ministries might be different, but before the Lord we are all part of the Body of Christ.  We are a priesthood of believers (I Peter 2:9).  Though called to different tasks, we are all equal before Him.  And He should receive all the glory, not people.

This brief description is not meant to provide all the answers to your questions.  We do want you to know that we stand firmly on the historical teaching of our Lord, His Word and His Church.  We strive to include everyone and help all find the Lord's will for their lives.  Our passion is to teach and preach the Word of God.  We hope to offer a variety of opportunities to serve as He leads.  If you have any questions, feel free to ask one of the Benton Bible Church members or one of the pastors.  We would enjoy visiting with you about any of your questions.
